The objective for this activity is to get students up and moving to engage them while learning about how to identify the main idea and supporting details. In the end, this activity will build a stronger understanding of the key components needed to write effective non-fiction summary.
For this activity, students will receive a card and then be asked to arrange themselves in some sort of physical way around the room that would represent the main idea and supporting details. An example of this may be for the one student holding the main idea card to stand tall, students with the supporting detail cards kneel, and students with the detail cards sit on the floor.
Included in this engaging main idea and details bundle is:
→Six sets of Main Idea/Supporting Detail cards (animals, transportation, holidays, subjects, continents, and sports); each set containing 30 cards
→A teacher answer key for the six sets of cards
→One set of blank Main Idea/Supporting Detail cards for teacher to create his/her own topic
→One Example Set (farm animals)
→One Main Idea & Supporting Details Slideshow (20 slides)
